Computer Based Testing Information

CLEP

The College Level Examination Program is a series of examinations that allow individuals to earn college credit for what they already know, regardless of where they learned it. CLEP is the most widely accepted credit-by-examination program in the United States. CLEP exams are all ninety minutes long and are administered only on computer. Students receive instant score reports following completion of the exam. With the exception of English Composition with Essay, the exams are composed of multiple-choice questions. The English Composition with Essay exam consists of a forty-five minute multiple choice sections and a forty-five minute essay section, which must be typed.

The Testing Center offers all CLEP exams. However, most universities do not offer credit for all of the tests. LSUA students should check the current catalogue to see which credits are offered. Students from other universities are responsible for checking with their own institution to see if credit will be awarded for various CLEP tests.

For more information, see About CLEP

CLEP exams are given on Thursdays only at 8:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m., and 1:00 p.m. Bring proper identification, and be prepared to pay $65.00 CLEP fee (credit card preferred, cash not acceptable) and $20.00 LSUA administration fee (cash or check only). An appointment must be made by calling (318)427-4492.

SAM

SAM Challenge is a computer competency examination that harnesses the power of state-of-the-art simulated technology, allowing students to demonstrate skill mastery in Microsoft Office 2003, Windows, the Internet, and computer concepts in a realistic, hands-on environment.

  1. Exams are offered on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 8:30, 10:30, and 1:30.
  2. Examinees MUST register prior to the exam. (427-4492 or LMCW0oR@jRTA.edu)
  3. There is a $20 test administration fee. (Cash or Check)
  4. You are allowed to take the SAM Challenge three times in order to prove computer competency. Each attempt will have a separate cost, and you must wait 30 days (one month) between attempts. For example, if you take the CCE on August 15 and do not pass, you would have to wait until September 15 for your second attempt. This month of waiting gives you time to review the items listed on the Information Sheet for the CCE. If you do not pass the exam after three attempts, then you must take CMIS 1000 (Basic Computer Literacy).
  5. If you are currently enrolled in CMIS 1000 and you are attempting to test out of the class, you MUST TAKE THE SAM CHALLENGE BEFORE THE LAST DAY TO DROP CLASSES. There will be a $20.00 fee for the test. Drop dates for full-semester classes, A-term classes, and B-term classes are listed in the Schedule of Classes for each semester. If you pass the CCE, you must drop the CMIS 1000 class by the drop date.
  6. If you are currently enrolled in CIS 1000 and are not attempting to test out of the class, you must take the SAM Challenge toward the end of the semester as a requirement of the class.
  7. You must make 70% in order to pass the SAM Challenge.
  8. You will have 90 minutes to complete the SAM Challenge.
  9. Your results will be displayed at the end of the exam.
  10. If you pass the SAM Challenge, Admissions and Records will keep a permanent record of your satisfying the Computer Literacy requirement for graduation. Your passing the SAM Challenge will NOT be posted to your transcript as a 1-hour credit.
  11. If you pass the CCE, you will receive a copy of the "Competency or Credit Awarded" Form in the mail plus a copy will be sent to your advisor in your department
